First off - adding flouride to drinking water has almost no effect on preventing cavities (& usually causes enamel damage - dental flourosis). This is due to the extremely brief contact of the F- ion with the tooth enamel. Ingesting flouride to fix your teeth is like pulling your tongue to shorten your hair. It does not work systemically, period! Secondly, even if flouride addition did actually help, there would be different doses for different body masses - Would you give your child the same dose of medicine as an adult? Thirdly: While flouride does not directly cause cancer (no mutagenic properties), it damages systems that would prevent cancers. Please do not look to any govt agency for facts on this (I've worked with the EPA, OSHA, and more for over a decade) - most of their articles are re-writes all pointing back to 2 or 3 articles more than 60 years ago written by a group paid for by the aluminum & fertilizer industries. You find this in 99.999% of "govt" studies where the data/info was taken from private companies. It's kind of like grading your own homework. Another thing to note: The actual compound is Fluorosilicic acid (a byproduct of the fertilizer industry -hmm so many ex managers in that industry now work for the EPA - coincidence?). This corrosive and lethal compound leaches toxic metals out of piping , so they usually, but not always, add extra buffers to the water, depending on the hardness (adding more to the toxic soup we call tap water). Lastly: The "endorsement" of this practice by the ADA and AAP is just that - an endorsement based on studies published 60 years ago that did not include a SINGLE HUMAN TRIAL - These clowns are pencil pushing "yes men" that, their job includes regurgitating old false/heavily biased data into reports with charts and graphs and will NEVER report anything that goes against the grain as they'll lose their jobs/tenure. These agencies are a joke! They use "science by consensus" instead of by the scientific method.

While there is legitimate concern about fluoride in drinking water above what the EPA allows, all public health experts hold community water fluoridation to be safe, effective and inexpensive. There have been 9 systematic reviews since 1990 to find fluoridation safe. Each reviewed ALL the science and there is a bunch of it. There are nearly 6000 articles on fluoridation and about 44,000 on fluoride in the National Library's Database of peer reviewed science. Most recently the California Carcinogen Identification Committee reviewed the issue of fluoride and cancer and voted unanimously that fluoride doesn't cause cancer. Because of very clear opinion from many professional organizations like the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Public Health Association, fluoridation reaches 74% of Americans on public water systems. It Matters
Both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Dental Association endorse water fluoridation as safe and effective. I trust their knowledge and expertise. And I'm sure most people would trust them over the unproven claims that are in this article.
