How Safe is Your City Drinking Water?
In New York City and surrounding cities like Brooklyn, the infrastructure is crumbling. As you walk down the sidewalks, and drive down the streets, you can see that the city management is not doing a very good job of taking care of things on the outside. Bridges and tunnels are crumbling, which could one day lead to a devastating situation. But a more immediate crisis is the crumbling pipes beneath the cities. Even if the water is treated at the municipal water treatment facilities, passage through crumbling pipes exposes the water to a high level of heavy metals, which is dangerous to drink and very bad for water ionizers or any other water appliance.
Heavy Metals and Water Ionizers
In our experience, customers who live in New York City and Brooklyn and surrounding areas have much shorter filter life spans than other parts of the country. This is because the heavy metals from the tap water is clogging the filters up quicker than other parts of the country. What’s worse is that the heavy metal content is so high, it is spilling out of the clogged filters and contaminating the components and tubing inside the water ionizer.
I personally just fixed a Genesis platinum that had been exposed to so many heavy metals from New York City, that they had stained the water tubes throughout the unit orange. I ended up having to replace the solenoids because they failed due to the exposure from the heavy metals, which cause the water flow meter to fail, which created a leak that caused the electrical system to fail. This is the worst broken water ionizer that I have had to fix coming from the New York City area and is an indication to me that the water there is getting much, much worse than it has ever been before.
Heavy Metal Pre-filter
I urge anyone who owns a water ionizer and uses it in the New York City area to get a heavy metal pre-filter installed as soon as possible. You can get a heavy metal pre-filter from Water for Life USA for $54.99 Plus $20 for the housing to put it in. There are other stores online that also sell heavy metal pre filters and housings. But if you shop elsewhere, you have to make sure that you get at least a KDF 55 filter and a standard housing with 1/4 inch connectors.
The New York City area is not the only part of a country that is suffering from crumbling infrastructure. If you live in the Chicago area, Philadelphia area, Boston area, or even the Washington DC area, you should also consider getting a heavy metal pre-filter. Just about any major city on the East Coast suffers from the same lack of maintenance issues that New York City suffers from. Your filter life may still be good in some cities on the East Coast, but our experience is that, with each year that passes, the problem is getting worse with heavy metals, so it is a good idea to get ahead of the situation by getting a heavy metal pre-filter now.
For any other US city, it is a good idea to Google your city’s annual water report and look for the field that says heavy metals. If there are heavy metals in your drinking water, it is a good idea to get a heavy metal pre-filter, even though the EOS water filters remove those heavy metals. Getting a heavy metal pre-filter will improve the filter lifespan of your EOS water ionizer filters and prevent any heavy metals from eventually overwhelming those filters and damaging the components inside your water ionizer.
To your health!
