It shouldn’t be acceptable that millions of us are poisoned each year by drinking tap water. But that is a fact of life in the US as many of us unwittingly consume too many pollutants like chlorine, calcium, heavy metals, and even trace pharmaceuticals that can be found in each glass of tap water we consume.

Choosing a water filter system based on distillation relies on this age old water purifying method and it is a simple process: water is heated to boiling so that the water vapour rises to a condenser. In the condenser, cooling water lowers the temperature so the vapour can be condensed, collected and stored. The apparent health benefits derive from the fact that most contaminants stay behind in what is called the liquid phase vessel, leaving the water that is produced by a distillation machine pure and untainted.
But despite distillation being an old practice, it hasn’t been used for health purposes until relatively recently. That probably has everything to do with the fact that there are health concerns when it comes to drinking water, or any liquid, that has been distilled. And the problem this time arises from not what is in the water, but what isn’t there. For while distillation water filter systems can be effective at removing tap water contaminants, they will also strip vital minerals from the water too, turning it harmfully acidic.
And I think we’d all agree that it is no use protecting your health from one aspect of water as you simultaneously endanger it with another. So if a water filter system based around the distillation method is not the wisest choice, what is the alternative?
