A recent report has concluded that radioactive contaminants are getting into drinking water all across the United States. At least 70% of Americans are exposed on a daily bases, that’s 170 million people! If you don’t have a multi-stage water filter or a water ionizer, now is the time to seriously consider getting one.
In Simi Valley California there was a nuclear and rocket testing laboratory. That laboratory has leached radioactive cesium-137, strontium-90, and plutonium-239, along with a mix of other chemicals and heavy metals. These radioactive chemicals and metals were leached into the ground from various spills, leaks and the use of open-air burn pits from that laboratory.
Unfortunately, this situation is common across the US. Production of nuclear weapons and energy from fissionable material is a large source of these contaminants. So is mining for uranium. These radioactive elements can be introduced into the water from medical treatments including using radioactive iodine to treat thyroid disorders. It can even be unearthed during gas and oil drilling or other industrial activities where the bedrock is cracked. Even scarier, these elements can seep into our water supply without even being provoked! They just naturally find their way there.
Environmental Working Group, a non-profit, estimates that 170 million Americans are at risk of drinking this contaminated water. The problem exists in all 50 states and these radioactive elements may increase the risk of cancer.
Texas has a bigger problem than most other states. They are served water from utilities that are currently reporting detectable levels of radium. Navajo Nation lands are also at risk from abandoned uranium mines. There is also the Manhattan project in Missouri which created nuclear waste, and there are contaminants leaching from phosphate mines in Florida.
The Environmental Working Group warns that mixing radioactive elements with water is a really bad idea. It is an easy way to get these radioactive elements inside people’s bodies. You also have to worry about these elements working their way up the food chain. For example, if fish are exposed to these elements and you eat that fish, you can get those elements in your body.
Scientists have universally concluded that no amount of radiation is safe. At higher levels, radiation can trigger birth defects, impaired development, and cause cancer in any part of your body. The earlier you are exposed to radiation, the more damage it will do over time.
If you have a well, you are really at risk. Private wells are not regulated so it’s up to you to test for these elements and radiation. People with wells have to use multi-stage water filtration that targets these elements. But everyone else should do it too. The truth is our municipal water treatment facilities don’t test for many of the harmful contaminants and elements in the water. And even the ones they do test for, they allow certain amounts that they consider safe.
Hopefully, in the future, there will be stricter regulations regarding our drinking water. But for now, you must protect yourself with a multi-stage water filtration system like the ones you find in our water ionizers.
