ToggleThere are many preservatives in the food that we eat. The preservatives help protect the food from spoilage and attacks from bacteria and viruses. Some preservatives, such as ascorbic acid which is Vitamin C, are fine for us. Taurine is another preservative common in food that actually helps balance electrolytes in our body. But other preservatives are flat-out terrible for us. Here are the ones to watch out for.
Sodium nitrites are commonly added to meat. They preserve color and flavor. But they also mess with your stomach. They have been linked to pancreatic and colon cancer. Yuck!
Sulfites are banned in fresh fruits and vegetables. But they are used in other foods. So you have to be very careful. They have been linked to asthma attacks that are sometimes fatal.
BHA is a preservative that you might find in a bag of potato chips. it is there to stop the chips from becoming rancid. However, BHA has been linked to cancer.
Mayonnaise and ice-cream may also be problematic to eat. The emulsifiers that they use in them have been shown to throw off gut bacteria. This can lead to inflammatory bowel disease. In our opinion, that sounds like one of the worst diseases you could possibly get.
Preservatives are in most processed foods. So the best way to eat a preservative free diet is to eat a natural diet. You should purchase fruits and vegetables from your local farmers market. When you’re at the store, avoid the processed foods that you find in the frozen aisle or in boxes.
If you want to see an example of preservatives gone absolutely nuts, go pick up a box of scalloped potatoes or Spanish rice and read the ingredients list. There is so much junk in there to stop it from going rancid and rotten, it was made in a lab not a kitchen!
