Driving down the interstate the other day I noticed a billboard for Essentia bottled alkaline water. This is exciting because we have been promoting ionized water or ion water for over 12 years and finally it is becoming mainstream. But is bottled alkaline water a good alternative to a water ionizer?
For starters, there are different types of bottled alkaline water. Most bottled alkaline water is made alkaline by minerals, which isn’t really beneficial to your health. Water is the US is typically hard and is already full of alkaline minerals like calcium, magnesium and potassium. So, adding alkaline minerals to water and then bottling it doesn’t make any sense. Also, just making water alkaline doesn’t add antioxidants to it. That means drinking alkaline water can still be damaging to your health because the water is lacking in ions and is oxidizing (it has a positive ORP).
Essentia is bottled alkaline ionized water, which is better. But it’s still not as good as ionized water from an EOS water ionizer.
You should also consider that bottled alkaline water is expensive. A liter of Essentia bottled alkaline ionized water will cost you $2 or $3 a liter while a liter of ionized water from an EOS water ionizer only costs you about $0.02. A water ionizer is certainly a more expensive investment to begin with, but over time it saves you a ton of money on your drinking water costs.
Secondly, fresh ionized water from an EOS water ionizer has a negative ORP of about -400 on its 9.5 pH setting. ORP measures the antioxidants that are in the drinking water. Bottled alkaline water doesn’t even have half this level of antioxidants because drinking bottled ionized water is not as good as drinking it freshly made. That makes freshly made ionized alkaline drinking water healthier to drink than bottled alkaline water.
Besides cost and antioxidant levels, you should also consider that bottled alkaline water uses soft plastic bottles that have the chemicals BPA and BPB in them. These are known to be carcinogenic. It is better to drink water from a glass or at least from a polycarbonate bottle. There’s also the issue of the waste that is created with every bottle that you buy. Many times, the bottle doesn’t make it to the recycling bin and ends up in our landfills where decomposition takes forever and the chemicals pollute our ground water.
The last thing to consider is the convenience factor. You are supposed to drink at least 6 ounces of water every hour that you are awake. That would be at least 5 Essentia bottles every single day, and 35 bottles a week. It’s just not fun to haul those bottles from your supermarket to your home. It is much more convenient to simply press the on button on your EOS water ionizer and have freshly made ionized water on demand.
While it is an exciting development to see bottled alkaline water being promoted in a mainstream way, it really does draw attention to the fact that an in-home water ionizer is a much better way to get the healthiest drinking water in your home.
