Did you know that more than half of all bottled water comes from the tap? Furthermore, you pay $0.89 a gallon to as much as $8.26 per gallon compared to the pennies you pay for tap water. But wait! There’s much more to this bottled water deception.
Most people buy bottled water believing that it is safer than tap water. This is mostly untrue. The federal government requires far more rigorous and frequent safety testing and monitor of municipal drinking water than of bottled water. Way more!
The Food and Drug Administration regulates only 30% to 40% of bottled water sold across state lines. Carbonated bottled water isn’t regulated at all! Furthermore, the FDA also only requires that companies test for bacterial contamination in bottled water once per week. They must test four empty bottles only once every 3 months for bacteria. The FDA also does not test bottled water for DEP, a chemical that is used to produce plastic water bottles. DEP is a potential cancer agent in humans.
According to the natural resource defense Council study of 103 bottled water brands, about one-quarter of the brands tested contain bacterial or chemical contamination. The levels of this contamination violated state standards!
The economics for bottled water is also very bad. Cities across the nation spend 70 million dollars or more annually to dispose of plastic water bottles. Plastic water bottle production in the US requires about 17.6 million barrels of oil. Worldwide, the bottling of water uses 2.7 million tons of plastic each year.
About 86% of empty plastic water bottles in the US land in garbage instead of being recycled. That amounts to about two million tons of PET plastic bottles piling up in landfills each year! Many plastic bottles end up being incinerated, releasing toxic byproducts such as chlorine gas and ash laden with heavy metals into the air.
Another issue that most people don’t think about is that water bottlers harm the environment by depleting aquifers and other groundwater sources. They often don’t pay local economies any money for the water that they take. They take the maximum amount of water that they want regardless of a drought or water shortage. Then the local water district bears all the responsibility for the well-being of the water infrastructure that is required. That is just not fair!
