There are many brands of alkaline water on the market today, such as Affinity’s Alkalized Water, Essentia Water, Alka Power Alkaline Water, Alka-Pure Natural Alkaline Wellness Water, Nordenauer, The Highest Anti-oxidant Water, Akasha Premium pH 10.0 Alkaline Water, Neo Water, the list goes on.
Each brand promises to give you the full benefits of alkaline water in bottled form, and while in some cases the water is branded as purified, artesian, or pH, all of them essentially claim that they give you the same thing: healthy alkaline water that can improve your health. However, what you are getting may be a little different to what the marketing is telling you.
Yep, you read that right. Some brands of ‘alkaline water’ bottles do not even fulfil the criteria that is their main selling point, which is being water that is actually alkaline. The reason for this is because of the process that all bottled waters must go through before they are put on store shelves: filtration. When you filter water using reverse osmosis and distillation, like is the case for bottled water, you remove all the alkaline minerals and oxygen as well as unwanted particles, and this has the effect of lowering the pH to acidic levels. And when the main purpose of drinking some of these brands’ bottled water is because you want to, you know, actually drink alkaline water, we obviously have a massive problem.
There are some brands that claim to add minerals and alkalinity though UV lighting to their water to make them alkaline, and whilst these types of bottled water may have some degree of alkalinity, every type of bottled water has a problem that they do not protected against.
Bottled water makers say their brand of water is pure. But then again, as we have discovered, they also claim to be selling you alkaline water when some of them aren’t, so I wouldn’t take that assertion as gospel. And you’d be right to be sceptical as we know all bottled waters are put into plastic bottles that release some degree of chemicals from the plastic into the water. And this problem is exacerbated when the plastic that makes the bottles are stored in hot areas exposed to the sun.
What’s scary is that all plastics are derived from petrochemicals which are byproducts of the petroleum industry. Many petrochemicals like Phthalates and BPA are among the cancer-causing chemicals known to be present in foods and beverages stored in plastics. Worryingly, alkaline water has properties that means it can absorb these petrochemicals, meaning that consuming bottled alkaline water egularly could be harmful as you may be washing down an unhealthy dose of chemicals each time. When the express purpose of drinking alkaline water is to boost your health, this fact defeats the purpose entirely.
So if you want to receive real health benefits from clean and healing alkaline water, bottled brands of alkaline water is not the way to go. Either get alkaline water directly from a natural spring, or get it straight from your home tap using a water ionizer machine.
