Across the United States, infrastructure is in disrepair. Bridges are rusting, our power grid is inefficient and needs serious updating, and of even greater concern, our pipes that deliver tap water are deteriorating and contaminating our water with heavy metals.
Most of us are well aware of what happened in Flint, Michigan, where heavy metals in the water contaminated the town’s water supply. That same situation is happening all over the country. In New York City, for example, the presence of heavy metals in the water causes our water ionizer filters to clog within 3 to 4 months. All of our customers in the New York City area are required to install heavy metal pre-filters.
Deteriorating pipes are also a problem in Philadelphia, Boston, Portland, Chicago, and the suburbs surrounding those major cities. Other cities are also right on the cusp of having significant problems. It’s a good idea to check with your local Municipal Water company to see what are the current levels of heavy metals in the water.
When reviewing the report, pay particular attention to high levels of mercury, arsenic, copper, and lead, as these metals have been shown to have a particularly detrimental effect on human health, including developmental delays in children and immune system disorders in adults.
You might also want to ask what your Municipal Water company is using to treat their deteriorating pipes. Many are using harsh chemicals, such as chromium-6, to clean the pipes. If you remember the movie Erin Brockovich, chromium-6 has been linked to cancer.
Municipal water companies have also been known to coat their pipes with glue-like adhesives. These adhesives are toxic, and they’re never meant to be a permanent fix to the problem of crumbling, leaky pipes. What’s happening is that the adhesives applied long ago are also deteriorating, and the chemicals in those adhesives are contaminating your drinking water.
To address these water issues, we recommend, of course, getting a water ionizer.
