The US Geological Survey has concluded that pharmaceuticals, hormones and antibiotics have been found in a significant amount of the groundwater sources in the United States. That means you are most likely drinking drugs in your tap water that could make you very sick.
One of the drugs that they found in high concentrations was bisphenol-a, also known as BPA. It’s found in consumer plastics (like water bottles) and can disrupt your endocrine system. They also found methotrexate which is an immunosuppressant and used in cancer treatment. The USGS also found acetaminophen or Tylenol in the water as well as fluoxetine which is Prozac, an antidepressant.
These tests found at least one hormone or antibiotic in 14% of the aquifers that supply drinking water. At this point, no tests have been done to know the exact amount of hormones or antibiotics that are reaching your glass.
Experts also don’t know what kind of health effects exposures to these drugs and antibiotics will have on people long-term. They said they won’t know the answer to that for years to come.
