How much sleep do you need every night? It depends on your age. Newborns need 14 to 17 hours of sleep every night. Infants need 12 to 15 hours. Toddlers need 11 to 14. Preschoolers need 10 to 13. Not sleeping well can compound into bigger and bigger health problems. If you don’t sleep well for a few nights in a row, it could lead to depression or anxiety, which could make it even more difficult to sleep. Not sleeping well may also lead you to take medications or drugs that can also negatively impact your sleeping patterns.
These compounding health problems are what they call a slippery slope. A small sleeping problem can gain momentum and create serious health problems. So how do you keep from falling down the slippery slope. Diet is key.
A balanced diet is important to good sleep. You should be eating about 85% fruits, grains, vegetables and 15% protein. You should also be drinking about 8 ounces of water every single hour.
Hydration is essential to your body’s ability to sleep well. Dehydration creates body aches and pains which makes it hard to get to sleep. Dehydration may also cause you to wake up multiple times during the night.
When you sleep, your body detoxifies. If you eat a poor diet, your body has to work really hard when you sleep. That’s why it is very important to eat a diet that is full of antioxidants.
For example, drinking ionized water, which is full of antioxidants, will help your body process toxins throughout the day. This means your body will have less to do at night.
