In November, CNN reported that an Iranian terrorist group attacked a water utility facility in Pennsylvania. Now, Jake Sullivan, a White House National Security Advisor, has issued a letter to all U.S. governors this week warning them about Iranian cyber attacks on water and wastewater systems across the U.S.
In his letter, Sullivan stated that the Iranian Government Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has executed several “malicious cyberattacks” against the U.S.’s infrastructure, such as drinking water systems. Recently, the attacks have increased, prompting Sullivan to warn governors.
But it’s not just the IRGC looking to attack US infrastructure. Another terrorist group, called Volt Typhoon, which is based out of China, has also carried out cyberattacks against the U.S.
These terrorist groups like to target water systems because they usually lack the same level of cybersecurity as other critical systems in the U.S. This puts all of us at risk.
The biggest problem is that an attack can happen, and your water quality can be compromised before authorities are aware of it. That means your next glass of water may be potentially unsafe.
While it is unlikely that these terrorist groups would be able to poison tap water, they could compromise water safety systems, like those that monitor water contamination. This could allow some contaminants to exceed safety levels. They could also attack water distribution algorithms, shutting off your tap water completely.
We don’t write this to be alarmist, but since A terrorist attack has already happened against Pennsylvania water systems, and the White House is warning all U.S. governors, this is something that all of us should take seriously.
Water is critical to our life so having a multi-stage water filtration system in your home is no longer a luxury, it’s a must.
