Nitrates and nitrites get into our drinking water from animal agriculture. Specifically, it comes from cows and pig waste. This waste is not properly managed or disposed of. It gets dumped into our soil where it decomposes. Animal feces breaks down into nitrates and nitrites. They also come from the ammonia in animal urine. Yet another source is fertilizers used to grow the grain that is fed to the animals. When it rains, these nitrates and nitrites seep into our groundwater supply.
Believe it or not, some nitrates and nitrites are also used as preservatives in our food! They are commonly found in processed meats like lunch meat. Most meat that we consume is heavy in nitrates and nitrites. When you combine drinking nitrates and nitrites in your water and also consuming them by eating meats you are significantly increasing your risk for cancer!
When taken into the body by drinking water and through other dietary sources, nitrates and nitrites react with amines and amides to form N-nitroso compounds (NOC), which are known to cause cancer in humans. These cancers include gastric, thyroid, and glioma cancers.
Thyroid cancer is of particular concern for women because 33,000 women get thyroid cancer each year in the US. That’s three times as many as men! Close to 2000 women are dying each year from thyroid cancer. Meanwhile, gastric cancer affects more men than women. Both are absolutely devastating. They both account for thousands of needless deaths every year.
In 2006, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) concluded that nitrates or nitrites were probably carcinogenic to humans. But The US Food and Drug Administration considers the food additives sodium nitrate and sodium nitrite to be safe when used within their regulated limits. Our US Food and Drug Administration has really weakened over the years under pressure from corrupt politicians and animal agriculture lobbyists. That’s why they are not in line with the World Health Organization. The bottom line is nitrates and nitrites should not be used in our food!
First, you can limit your exposure to nitrates and nitrites by cutting out most meat from your diet. Our water ionizers will also filter out the nitrates and nitrates in your drinking water.
