From our previous articles you probably already know that fluoride, PFAS, chlorine, leftover pharmaceutical drugs, and heavy metals are big problems in our tap water. But did you know that the Environmental Protection Agency has identified over 700 pollutants that regularly occur in drinking water? That’s just what’s been identified! In reality, there are as many as 30,000 hazardous pollutants pouring out of our taps every day that pose serious risks to our health. Here are three that you should be concerned about: perchlorate, dioxins, and PCBs.
1) Perchlorate. This is a chemical compound that is a commercially produced salt. It is used as an oxidizer for pyrotechnic devices and to control static electricity in food packaging. If you live in a town where there is a processed food manufacturer like a meat processing plant, you should be particularly concerned.
Perchlorate can interfere with iodine uptake in your thyroid gland. It can disrupt the functions of your thyroid and even lead to a reduction in the production of the thyroid hormone. Many women especially are struggling with hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism. Maybe these thyroid problems that women are experiencing are because they are consuming perchlorate in their tap water? As of right now, municipal water treatment facilities are not specifically targeting perchlorate for removal, so you have to do it yourself.
2) Polychlorinated biphenyl. Also known as PCBs. PCBs are any class of toxic aromatic compounds that are often formed as waste in industrial processes. If you live near any industrial manufacturing plant, you should be concerned!
Even though PCBs have been banned in the United States, the persistence of these pollutants continues in our drinking water. PCBs are a major human health risk because they can damage fetuses, babies, and young children. They cause developmental and neurological problems from even exposure to even small amounts! If you recently gave birth to a child with neurological or physical damage, or you have children diagnosed with attention deficit disorder or are developmentally delayed, it may be from exposure to PCBs!
For your information, PCBs are not just found in your tap water. They also can be found in fish, meat, and dairy products. Catfish, buffalo fish, and carp have the highest levels. In general, you should not be giving your children any dairy products. Oat milk is a fantastic alternative for children.
3) Dioxins. Dioxins are highly toxic compounds that are produced as a byproduct of manufacturing usually in the making of herbicides and also paper bleaching. If you live near a paper factory or a chemical factory, you should be particularly concerned!
Dioxins can cause cancer, reproductive and developmental problems, damage to your immune system, and even interfere with your hormones! Besides being in your tap water, dioxins concentrate in the fatty tissues of animals. So eating animal fat will also expose you to dioxins. This is one of the reasons why bacon is considered carcinogenic. In general, you shouldn’t eat cows or pigs, or other animals because of the dioxins and other chemicals concentrated in their bodies. The water they drink is not filtered!
As we said at the beginning of this article, 700 hazardous contaminants have been identified and there are as many as 30,000 in our tap water. The bottom line is the municipal water treatment facilities that treat your tap water are not removing the majority of these contaminants from your drinking water.
