In our last article, we covered a study showing that chromium-6 is a prevalent, cancer causing chemical found in US water supplies across the US. But the problems don’t stop there. In a 2016 study, Harvard University found unsafe levels of polyfluoroalkyl and perfluoroalkyl, industrial chemicals linked with cancer, hormone disruption and other health problems! The US water quality problems continue to compound because water quality laws have remained virtually unchanged in 40 years. But the EPA is facing all kinds of political resistance to this. Judges are even stopping the enforcement of the act in certain states as this pressure mounts from conservative groups.
Most US water systems are fed by groundwater, which is usually cleaner than surface water since it’s filtered by soil and rocks, but big cities tend to rely on rivers and lakes, which are susceptible to higher levels of contaminants. If you live in or near a big city, you should be especially concerned.
The bottom line is your drinking water is not safe. In many places in the US, there hasn’t been any real and substantial improvements in treating drinking water in 40 years. Some of these chemicals are so new that their effects are not yet known and the side effects may not show up in people for years.
