I hate to break it to you but “water ionization” is just a marketing term. There is no such thing as “ionization” and water can’t be “ionized”. These terms were created to describe ions being created in water through electrolysis, which is a natural process created by a water ionizer machine or the sun.
But before you reach for your receipts, hear me out: just because the name has been coined in more recent years, it doesn’t mean that there haven’t been an abundance of studies into the scientific process behind water ionization. The technical term for ionized water is actually electrolyzed water and it has been comprehensively proven with over 40 years of clinical research.
Exactly what has been proven, you may ask? Well, for one, the process of ions being created in water through energy is a very real and tested one. An abundance of ions in water creates an abundance of antioxidants, so ionized water – or electrolyzed water, or whatever you want to call it! – is a proven method to introduce antioxidants to your body. But as you’ll discover, there are more benefits to ionized water that you may not be aware of.
When an ion and hydrogen atom combine through electrolysis, an abundance of antioxidants are created called hydroxyl ions. These little good guys help neutralize free radicals that they come into contact with. And that is just as well as there is also an abundance of cell-damaging free radicals in our bodies – through either our environment or what we eat. Only water that is electrolyzed or ionized by the sun or by a water ionizer has these hydroxl ions and this, at its core, is what makes water ionization a good idea if you are serious about your health. Unfortunately, bottled water or standard tap water doesn’t quite cut it as they don’t have any antioxidants!
Ionized water also gives another big health advantage – it is more easily absorbed by the body as it has smaller water molecules. This means you’ll feel more hydrated from drinking it.
So antioxidant ionized water from a natural spring or water ionizer can lower the oxidative stress on your body’s cells and more easily hydrates you. What else is it useful for?
Well, naturally, drinking alkaline water is a natural counter-balance to the acidity prevalent in acidic foods that form the staple of most American diets. Drinking alkaline water regularly can help remove the acid from your tissues and lower the stress on our bodies. But drinking the stuff in a glass isn’t the only way to consume it – water that has gone through the water ionization process is great to cook with. Whether it is using alkaline water in soups or when you are poaching eggs, trials have shown that the taste can be much improved when using it in place of normal tap water.
Not a lot of people know that the water ionization process in a water ionizer produces another product alongside just oxidized alkaline water. As normal water is processed inside these machines, it is separated between water that has a high alkalinity which you can drink, and “waste” product water that is acidic. But terming this other liquid “waste” doesn’t do justice to its usefulness.
Studies have shown that this form of ionized water is an effective sterilizer, so if you want a good alternative disinfectant that doesn’t contain noxious chemicals like the conventional products we use, the stuff that comes out of your water ionizer is ideal.
So whether you are using it to de-toxify your body, spruce up your food or occasionally need an alternative to chemical disinfectants, the water ionization process can bring real benefits to day-to-day living.
