Don’t be alarmed if you can’t recall ever coming across the term ‘ionized water’ from old high school science class. It is a marketing term coined to describe the special type of water that is produced from water ionizer machines.
So what is ionized water? Even though the name isn’t technically scientific, it has powerful health-boosting properties that are all very much based in science.
Ionized water is tap water that has been passed through an ionizer machine. By the time it reaches your tap faucet, the tap water has been filtered and turned into water with highly alkaline antioxidant properties.
If we want to learn what is ionized water exactly, we have to look at it scientifically. Ionized water is given its health-boosting alkaline and antioxidant content by the electrolysis process. Ionizers electrolyze water using a platinum-coated titanium electrode housed inside an electrolysis chamber; the central site for the electrolysis process. When water fills into this chamber, cations (positive ions) gather at the negative electrodes to create cathodic water (termed reduced water) and anions; negatively charged ions, gather at the positive electrode to make anodic water (oxidized water). It is the reduced water which we need to drink regularly to boost our health and strengthen our resistances to disease and illness, and this is usually what is being described when we read the term ‘ionized water’.
The cations in the reduced water have a natural alkalizing effect on the water, raising it to above 7 on the pH scale. And it also possesses superior hydrating properties, as the electrolysis process orders water molecules into a different structure, called micro-clustering. This means that the structure of the water molecules in ionized water more easily penetrate cells, and is thus much more hydrating. This has the huge health benefit of allowing our body to more easily flush waste from our cells, as well as all the benefits associated with better hydration (both physical and mental) on the body.
So what is ionized water used for? As a super-healthy drink, straight from your tap. Or to cook with as a healthier ingredient to food. And ionized oxidized water, as it is acidic, can be used as a chemical-free sterilizer.
