Investing in the best type of drinking water is an important decision that can have a huge impact on your long-term health.
When it should be common knowledge by now that U.S. tap water just isn’t up to the standard expected of safe drinking water and soda and other popular beverages are extremely unhealthy, more of us are turning to alternatives as our daily thirst quencher, and alkaline water is one of the most popular. But before you go out and buy alkaline water, there are some things you need to know. Because, believe it or not, there is a risk that you could swap out one unhealthy drinking product for another when you buy alkaline water when you’re not armed with the best information.

ater (or at least the reason they think they are buying it) is because it has the quality of being alkaline. This is obviously no surprise, but what does this mean and why do people believe alkaline water is healthy?
Well, to attain optimal health and well-being, our body has a pH balance. The optimal pH is actually a slightly alkaline 7.2 for humans, and when the body is unable to maintain the proper pH balance, there is a danger that the body will become overly acidic. If we’re overly acidic, acids accumulate inside of us, causing illness. Although it is possible for the body to become overly alkaline, it is very rare. The most common condition is a tendency toward acidosis caused by highly acidic beverages like soda, coca cola and fast, processed and cooked foods, as well as environmental toxins and stress.
Everything is working against us in this respect, so if we can cut out a source of acidity so dramatically as to make everything we drink alkaline and not acidic, the benefits to a person’s health will be clear as we help restore the pH balance. But simple alkaline water, in and of itself, is not actively healthy. It doesn’t have any attributes that make it healthy aside from the fact it simply isn’t acidic.
Knowing that alkaline water can help restore the of-so-important pH balance, people make the mistake of assuming that any drinking water that has an alkalinity is the best for their health. It doesn’t work like that. Alkalinity is just one attribute that any water can have, and it is in fact something that tap water in many states across the county possess. That doesn’t mean that folk living in areas with alkaline tap water are any healthier than the rest of us. So if you are paying for plain old alkaline water, you are being ripped off.
There are other attributes that are actively health-boosting that can be found in a water. And these attributes can all be found in a type of alkaline water called ionized water. This special type of drinking water has unique properties and is produced by a water ionizer after plain old tap water has been passed though it. An ionizer will filter the tap water and perform a process called electrolysis on it, and it is this process that gives this type of alkaline water unique properties. Ionized water is micro-clustered, which means that at a molecular level, the structure of the water molecules are smaller and thus more easily penetrate cells. In plain English, this means that ionized water is more hydrating – just the quality needed to flush acidic waste and toxins from our cells.
If water that has the single property of being alkaline is a waste of money, to buy alkaline water that is bottled is even worse. Shockingly, bottled alkaline water is very likely to be acidic and not alkaline, owing to the fact that bottled drinks use water that has been through the distillation process. Distillation has the unfortunate consequence of turning water acidic as it is primarily a process used to clean water of contaminants so that it can be bottled and sold to consumers. But so effective is the distillation cleaning process that beneficial molecules found in a water are also removed, like minerals that give water its alkaline quality. The removal of dissolved minerals gives the distilled bottled water the property of being able to actively absorb toxic substances, so when these types of waters come into contact with air, it absorbs carbon dioxide. And what does this do? It makes water, such as bottled alkaline water, acidic.
So far we have seen there is the potential to fall into the pitfalls of wasting your money or even harming your health with products that you may have believed were healthy for you. And whilst this article is about what you need to know when you buy alkaline water, the truth is that you don’t technically need to buy it at all. That’s certainly the case for the best type of alkaline water out there: alkaline ionized water made by a water ionizer. Of course, you would need to invest in a good ionizer machine first, but put aside the idea of buying alkaline water drops or bottled alkaline beverages each time with one of these appliances, as ionizers produce the healthiest alkaline water direct from your home taps.
