It is the middle of summer and most of you are feeling the heat. In Europe, the heat is so bad that plastic is melting in public places! They’ve never seen heat like this before.  With these extreme temperatures, hydration has never been more important.  Most of you know that drinking sugary beverages does not help your body during the heat.  The best choice is to drink water.  If you’re wondering what water will help your body the most, alkaline ionized water is a clear choice.  Here’s why.

During Summer Heat Fight the Temptation to Do Nothing

The problem is that heat makes you feel lethargic. You really don’t want to do anything but find some nice cool corner and sit there. You have to fight that tendency.   You have to keep drinking water!  During a normal day, you should be drinking at least 8 oz of water every hour. But on hot days, you should be drinking 12 oz or more.

The quality of the water matters. If you’re drinking water that is from a distiller or a reverse osmosis filter, which is most bottled water, you are hydrating your body but the acidity of that water is causing your body to work harder than it should. Your body has to create a response to consuming something that’s acidic, so drinking acidic water causes your body to work unnecessarily.

Why Drinking Alkaline Ionized Water Makes a Difference

At the very least, you should drink water that’s alkaline. Alkaline water can be made alkaline by adding minerals to it. But the better way is to use water electrolysis which is what you find in a water ionizer. When you use water electrolysis, you are changing the chemical structure of the water in a way that reduces the water molecule cluster size. Ionized water is ” wetter” than tap or bottled water because it has more water molecules in the same amount of space.  This makes it up to three times more hydrating than tap or bottled water.

Ionized water is also full of dissolved hydrogen which is a powerful antioxidant for your body. This dissolve hydrogen will reduce oxidative stress and help your body to run more efficiently. This is super important when it’s hot outside. You want to give your body beverages and food that helps it, not causes it to work harder.

Alkaline Foods Also Help Your Body Stay Cool

When it’s hot outside, you should also try to eat an alkaline diet. That means that you really shouldn’t be eating high-protein foods. Hamburgers, hot dogs, steaks, and even plant-based burgers put a lot of extra stress on our bodies to digest that protein. It’s much better to concentrate on leafy greens, fruit, split peas, red lentils, and other whole and plant-based foods. You should also avoid frying or using oil at all during the summer. All that extra fat in your diet will make you feel greasy and gross and make the heat feel even worse!

You should also look to minimize how much you eat during hot summer days. If you’re working hard, then it makes sense to eat 2,500 calories or more. But on hot days, you should focus on moving less and eating less. Give your body what it needs to cool down and nothing that’s going to cause it extra stress.

Cool Foods Help You Feel Cooler

The temperature of the foods and beverages you consume also matters. Frozen fruit tastes great. Frozen fruit in a blender is a wonderful summertime treat. You can make alkaline ionized ice cubes in your freezer and keep your glass of ionized water constantly chilled. Fresh lettuce chilled in the refrigerator makes a wonderful salad for dinner.

The bottom line is during these hot days you should really be focusing on drinking more ionized water. You should also focus on eating less, eating natural and plant-based foods, and taking it easy. If you can do these things, you will feel much better during the extreme heat.
