A groundbreaking new study in Minnesota has shown a clear link between PFAs in tap water and infertility, premature birth, and low birth weight babies in women. The peer-reviewed study involved 50,000 cases and was published in the Journal of Environmental Health.
According to the researchers, from 2001 to 2006, babies born in Oakdale, Minnesota were 36 percent more likely to be underweight and 45 percent more likely to be born prematurely, compared to babies born in cities where the water was not contaminated with PFAs. Also, the fertility rate was 15 to 25 percent lower among Oakdale women of childbearing age, compared to the general population.
It just so happens that there is a 3M Manufacturing plant just a few miles from Oakdale. 3M is one of the leading manufacturers of PFAs! In their own studies, 3M concluded that PFAs are “forever chemicals” that build up in people’s blood. They have known this for decades and haven’t done enough to protect women from these dangerous chemicals.
PFAs are a group of chemicals used to make fluoropolymer coatings that resist heat, oil, water, and stains. An example is the Teflon that’s used on pans. The problem is corporations like 3M are irresponsible in their handling of these chemicals. They often end up in rivers and streams, and lakes and this contaminated water eventually ends up in our water supply. Women then drink the tap water contaminated with PFAs and these “forever chemicals” build up in their blood and never go away.
Another huge problem is that other studies have concluded that the safe level for consuming PFAs is 1 part per trillion. However, the current EPA standard is 70 parts per trillion! The EPA is not keeping people safe from these PFAs.
The question arises that if corporations like 3M know that PFAs are harmful and the EPA knows that PFAs are in our drinking water, why isn’t the EPA doing more to protect people? You may be surprised to know that corporations like 3M and Dupont spend more supporting political candidates and influencing public policy that favors their profit margins than they do cleaning up after themselves.
The problem with these mega-corporations is that they are loyal primarily to their profit margins, which their stock-holders use to pay themselves huge dividends. They are focused on money, not human health, so you have to protect yourself.
The same study that linked PFAs to harming women also concluded that using a water filter to remove the PFAs significantly reduced the reproductive, infertility, premature birth weight, and other problems they had noted. Since the EPA is not filtering your tap water enough, and corporations are focused on profit margins, it is up to you to install a strong filtration system to protect you and your family from PFAs.
