When most of us think of the government shutdown, we think of closed national parks and federal workers not getting a paycheck. But did you know that the safety of our food and water is also compromised? Nearly 90% of the EPA staff is furloughed during the current shutdown, which means that water safety inspections and other critical functions are delayed or halted altogether.

Usually, the EPA Sets and enforces water quality standards, inspects treatment facilities and industrial discharges, and provides funding for infrastructure improvements, including filtering our water. However, with the government shutdown, infrastructure improvement projects will be delayed or even canceled if they are already behind schedule. Routine inspections may also be delayed or canceled.

That means that the food you eat and the water you get from your tap may not be inspected during the government shutdown. Usually, there isn’t a problem, but a worst-case scenario could emerge that could severely threaten our health.

Greedy Businesses Could Dump Toxins Into Our Water

Those who run confined animal feeding operations, also known as factory farms, could use the government shutdown as an excuse to dump a buildup of animal waste into our rivers, lakes, and oceans. They’ve done it before. Industrial factories may also do the same thing. Potentially, there could be a massive surge of pollutants hitting our aquifers and other Sources of our drinking water. Since the inspections aren’t proceeding as usual, if there is a hazardous surge of a specific chemical, such as heavy metals used in a factory, we may not be aware of it until people become very sick.

In general, there may be increased levels of antibiotics, detergents, growth hormones, and other factory chemicals during this government shutdown. That means your tap water will be impacted. The question is, will the impact be enough to make us sick?
