Table of Contents
ToggleWe often get asked how to recycle a used water ionizer water filter. It’s a simple question but the answer is a lot more complicated. The problem is your typical curbside recycling bin does not accept water filters. So we’ve compiled a few options.
Depending on your Waste Disposal Company, there may be certain days when they take items like water filters. You have to call them and ask about these special recycling days. They probably won’t come to your home and pick them up, though. It usually works with you having to take them to your local waste disposal company.
On occasion, high schools and other community organizations run a recycling fundraiser. These fundraisers involve taking old electronics or other hard-to-recycle items and you can often bring your water filters to these. Just go to Google and search for any local community recycling fundraisers that might be happening, especially this spring and summer.
Another option is a company called TerraCycle. They not only will recycle water filters, but they also recycle old toothbrushes, candy wrappers, espresso pods, Keurig pods, and a variety of other items that are normally deemed unrecyclable. You have to set up an account with them on their website and then you have to mail them a minimum of 5 lb of recyclables. On some items, they only accept one shipment a year so you’ll have to ask them. Once you have 5 lb of water ionizer water filters to send to them, you can recycle them that way.
A final option is what they call pay to recycle options. There are a few commercial websites out there that you can pay to recycle normally unrecyclable items. One such website is recyclewaterfilters.com. you can contact them and ask how much it would cost to recycle your water ionizer water filters.
If you’re not having any luck with any of these options, you can refer to the Earth911 recycling database. Go to the Earth911 website and type in water filters and your zip code and they will list local facilities that take water filters. A word of caution: even if it’s listed on the Eartth911 website, it’s still a good idea to call them before you make the trip. Recycling programs frequently change, especially with COVID, so call ahead to make sure they are still running.
We understand that being health conscious and environmentally conscious go hand-in-hand. We hope these options help you to find a way to recycle your water ionizer water filters instead of throwing them in the trash where they will clog up a landfill. Give us a call if you have any questions.
