Your tap water is full of minerals. If you live in the southern parts of the US, it’s full of a lot of minerals. When these minerals stick or congeal together, they form scale. Scale is a big problem for water ionizers because it sticks to what it comes in contact with. It will gum up your water tubes, gum up your plates, and even gum up the spigot where you collect your ionized water. Minerals stuck to the plates reduce the ionization those plates are capable of, which means less antioxidants in your glass of water.
To combat scale, virtually all water ionizers have a built in cleaning system. Some of the less expensive models and older models clean by running a cleaning cycle after a set amount of liters that have been ionized. There is a built in timer and when the timer reaches 60 or 80 liters, the screen will flash or turn red and the water ionizer will switch to its strongest acid water setting. This acid water is flushed over the plates for about twenty seconds.
There are a couple problems with this acid water washing system. The first is that the water that is being processed during this twenty second cleaning cycle is being wasted. This is the equivalent of several glasses of water. Most of our consumers are mindful of the environment and also don’t like paying for water they aren’t using, so these cleaning cycles are a big problem for them.
Secondly, you can’t use your water ionizer when these cleaning cycles are running. You just have to sit there and wait for twenty seconds before you can continue using your water ionizer. Sometimes these automatic cleaning cycles will just fire on while you’re using your water ionizer. So, you may be filling up a big pitcher of alkaline ionized water to serve to your guests and suddenly your water ionizer will start cleaning, pumping acid water into your pitcher of water!
More advanced water ionizer cleaning systems reverse the polarity on the water ionizer plates to repel away minerals that are stuck to them. Sometimes these reverse polarity cleaning cycles will turn on for a couple of seconds before you use your water ionizer. Sometimes they will turn on after each time you use your water ionizer. The most advanced systems don’t even use water when they are cleaning, which is much more convenient.
There is an even better and more effective system than these reverse polarity cleaning systems. It’s called DARC and it stands for “double automatic reverse cleaning.” The biggest advantage to the DARC system is that it runs while you are making your alkaline ionized water. It doesn’t need to turn on before or after you use your water ionizer, or waste water.
While the DARC system is cleaning, it is reversing the polarity on your plates every twenty seconds, continuously repelling minerals so they never get a chance to start building up and causing problems. DARC is also alternating the polarities on your plates. For every forty seconds of DARC cleaning, it runs 20 seconds of one polarity and then 20 seconds of a reverse polarity, making it a “double” cleaning system.
