As you may know, the southern part of the United States has been under moderate to severe drought conditions for many years now. Well, it has taken its toll on the Mississippi River, which is now experiencing some of its lowest water levels in history. The water levels are so low that salt water is now pouring in from the Gulf of Mexico and mixing with the Mississippi River water. The reason why salt water pouring into the Mississippi River is a problem is because many communities rely on Mississippi River water for their drinking water. To combat this problem, a large mound of silt has been built on the floor of the Mississippi River. Saltwater is denser and stays at the bottom of the water current. So this mound of silt will block the salt water. However, the 30-foot mound that they built has already been succumbed by the ocean water, and now they are building it to 60 feet. Even at 60 feet, this will only delay the salt water reaching the water treatment facilities by two weeks.
That means in two weeks clean, drinking water will be a big problem for her New Orleans and surrounding communities. Another ongoing issue is that as the Mississippi River waters lower, the contaminants in the Mississippi River become more concentrated. That means that the water treatment facilities are already being overwhelmed by a larger amount of contaminants than they were built to handle.
The third factor to consider in all of this is that the water treatment facilities in the South, like much of the United States, are outdated and don’t do a very good job in the first place.
