Do you want to know the source of the best drinking water? No, it’s not any brand of bottled water that could be contaminated by its plastic container. Neither is it distilled water from a tap that has been stripped of its good minerals.
The best drinking water can be found flowing from a spring or a glacial stream. The natural alkaline water from these sources has special properties that make it extremely restorative for the human body. But what is it about natural alkaline water that makes it so good for us? And where can we access this healing water for regular consumption?
We all know that eating food which is natural is the best thing for our health. And the same applies when it comes to what we drink, too. There is nothing more healthy and nourishing to drink than natural alkaline water from a glacial stream (also known as meltwater) or from a spring.
Water from these sources is exposed to unique conditions that imbue it with the natural curative properties that we are all looking for, with the most important being the water’s high antioxidant content. That’s right, water can be packed with antioxidants! And it gains this state from a rather abundant source – the sun.
As the water flows over and between rocks or ice in a glacial stream or spring, it is exposed to the rays of the sun. These rays energise the water and promote the appearance of something called hydroxyl ions in the water. It is these ions that give the water its antioxidant qualities, and also make the water alkaline too.
Our body loves antioxidants. In fact, it NEEDS them because of how bad the modern lifestyle is and how polluted our environment has become. And naturally, because natural alkaline water is packed full of antioxidants, our bodies find this kind of drinking water extremely nourishing and curative.
But why does our body need antioxidants? Well, this is connected to a process called oxidation that is naturally occurring inside of us 24/7. Oxidation for us, in simple terms, means the renewal of cells through the metabolization of oxygen. Just think about how an apple slice turns brown, or a cut on your skin becomes raw and inflamed. This happens because oxygen is interacting with these cells – or any other cells in your body – in the oxidation process. This produces some type of change in those cells. They may die, such as with rotting fruit. In the case of cut skin, dead cells are replaced in time by fresh, new cells, resulting in a healed cut.
The problem is this birth and death of cells through oxidation doesn’t work how it should 100% of the time. In 1 or 2% of metabolisms, the process goes wrong and something called a free radical is produced. This damaging molecule is ‘free’ because it is missing another molecule, and will damage other cells to get what it needs. This cell damage that free radicals inflict can start the seed for disease, as when cells are damaged (but not destroyed), they grow abnormally and also reproduce abnormally.
The good thing about antioxidants is that they neutralize free radicals by giving them the molecules they are hunting for. It is the hydroxyl ions in natural alkaline water that are responsible for this, so the more of them the better.
With the ability to neutralize free radicals and protect the body from disease and sickness, natural alkaline water is something that we all should be drinking a lot more of.
But we can’t all go out and find a glacial stream or spring to stock up on water supplies. Of course we can’t. Knowing this, we need to be looking for the best alternative. And the closest thing to natural alkaline water is ionized water.
