The dangers of eating a sandwich

During the hot summer months it is common to want to spend less time in the kitchen and eat quick and easy meals. Many of us turn to sandwiches, but you may want to rethink that choice. The processed meat in your sandwich is a huge risk to your health.

Lunch Meat = Risk of Cancer

According to the World Health Organization, only 50 grams of processed meat a day will increase your risk for diabetes, colon cancer and other types of cancer by 18%!  It’s not the meat itself that is unhealthy. It is the diet that is fed to the animals that the meats come from.

Most of the pigs and cows and birds that we get our processed meats from eat a diet that is rich in soy and corn. Soy and corn are often treated with pesticides and are usually genetically modified.  Those animals are what they eat. And if you eat to them, you will become what they ate!

You can lower your risk of getting cancer and diabetes by eating healthier meats. If you purchase meats that are organic and natural, then you won’t be exposed to these pesticides.

Meat is Not Healthy

However, meat in general is not all that healthy for us. Yes, we need protein but protein can come from many different sources. The World Health Organization also suggests that we only eat about 10% to 15% of our total diet as meat.

One of the biggest risks in eating meat is the animal fat. Our body is not good at breaking down animal fat and it the fat can clog up our muscles and block the transfer of sugar from our blood. This increase in blood sugar is what leads to diabetes.

Quality Ingredients Matter

Sandwiches with whole grain non-processed bread and organic vegetables can be a staple in your summertime diet. To be healthy, all you have to do is take some time to pick out quality ingredients and limit processed meats. Your health is worth the extra expense.
