65% of all water use comes from animal agriculture. This refers to all the water that it takes to grow the grains and to water the animals that we eat and create the products that we get from animals. It is red meat that is high in saturated fat and has been linked to a variety of health problems. So removing beef from your diet is the best thing you can do for your health and conserve water.
There are also plenty of water-friendly alternatives out there. Beans, legumes, Ancient Grains, even plant-based meat substitutes use way less water. Cooking with these alternatives is actually way less expensive, too. A pot of split pea soup costs less than $3 to make and feeds a family for a day!
These plant-based alternatives are also healthier for you. Most of them feature significantly less saturated fat. For example, the Beyond Burger is it has 35% less saturated fat than beef.
While home water use only accounts for about 5% of total water use, conservation at home still matters. The biggest waste of water at home is our lawns. In fact, lawns serve no good use other than they look nice. They don’t produce that much oxygen. They use a lot of water to stay green. I once watched this Ted Talk featuring a Native American who said that if every American simply ripped out their lawns and replaced them with Native vegetable plants, there would be a consistent source of food for everyone. We’d feed our communities and also save a ton of water!
