What are the benefits of drinking alkaline water? It turns out, there aren’t very many. One of the most confusing aspects of the water ionizer marketplace is that the terms ionized water and alkaline water are used interchangeably. They are very different from one another. And they both don’t have the same health benefits.
No Real Benefits of Drinking Alkaline Water
Some websites will claim that the benefits of drinking alkaline water are an improvement in various diseases including cancer. They also claim you’ll have more energy, will detoxify, and you’ll have better digestion. None of this is true. As far as water chemistry goes, alkaline means that the water has a pH above 7. 7 is neutral. Anything below 7 is acidic.
While it is a good idea to drink beverages that are not acidic because anything acidic will steal from your body, if the water is alkaline it means that most likely it has alkaline minerals in it. In the United States, it is common for water to have calcium and magnesium in it. In the southern parts of the United States, there is so much magnesium and calcium that it congeals together to form scale. These alkaline minerals make the water alkaline and in some cases very hard.
Calcium and magnesium are certainly good for you as our other trace minerals, but they do not have the miraculous health benefits that some websites are claiming such as improving cancer and diabetes, etc.
Your Drinking Water Should have Antioxidants
Ionized water, on the other hand, is water that has been made alkaline by water electrolysis. Water electrolysis replicates the same process as the sun. It infuses the water with ions, which combine with the hydrogen to form a powerful antioxidant. It’s this powerful antioxidant that yields the health benefits that many websites claim. A water that is alkaline alone does not necessarily have any antioxidants. In fact all of the alkaline and hard water in the United States is dead water. There are no antioxidants in it. The reason for this is that it sits around in Municipal Water treatment facilities, or bottles, or in underground reservoirs for long periods of time before you ever drink it. This sitting around makes the water stagnant and dead and not good for you to drink.
So there are virtualy no health benefits of drinking alkaline water alone. People get enough magnesium and calcium in their diets from the food they eat.
