A potential customer called us the other day and asking if we could recommend a whole house water filter system. The short answer is we don’t recommend these systems at all.
The main reason why we don’t recommend whole house water filter systems is because you need different types of water at different places in your house. For example, for your shower you want the water to be acidic. Acidic water has the benefit of being a natural astringent that cleans out your pores and removes oil and dirt more effectively than neutral or alkaline water.
Since a whole house water filter system is usually carbon-based, it would only filter your tap water, which is most likely neutral. Or if you live in the southern parts of the US, your tap water is usually slightly alkaline. So a whole house water filter system would not work well for your shower.
Also, a whole house water filter system generally does not remove fluoride or heavy metals from the water. The heavy metals are too heavy for the carbon and the fluoride is too small to be filtered out. The problem is, in the shower, some of these nasty contaminants can become atomized. That means you could actually be breathing in fluoride vapors and not even know it! The fluoride and heavy metals and other contaminants that are missed by carbon-based systems could also seep into your skin. Your skin is very porous, especially when it is hot, so these contaminants can absorb right into your body.
We recommend a KDF heavy metal water filter for your shower. The KDF shower filter removes a lot of the alkaline minerals from the water so the water ends up being more acidic. It also removes the heavy metals and fluoride from your water.
For your laundry room, you also want acidic water. You also need to be able to filter out the heavy metals and fluoride from your water. That means a whole house water filter system is not great for your laundry room. You should also consider getting a KDF inline water filter for your laundry room.
In your kitchen, you need a water ionizer. That is because you need several different water pH levels to successfully run your kitchen. You need moderately strong alkaline water for drinking. You need super strong alkaline water for cooking and making your coffees and teas. You need super acidic water to sterilize bacteria and clean off produce before you cut and eat it. You also need a super advanced filtration system that a water ionizer offers to remove all of the heavy metals, nitrates, nitrates, leftover pharmaceutical drugs, and everything else that you don’t want to get into your food or drink.
The three areas where you most commonly use water in your house have different needs. That means a whole house water filter system will not work. The other major issue with them is that they are incredibly expensive. They usually run $5,000 or more and changing their filters can cost several hundred dollars at a time. Alternatively, replacing a KDF filter in your shower every 9 months costs you about $40. An inline KDF filter cost about $100. A water ionizer costs around $2,000 initially, but then changing the filters only cost about $100 a year. A water ionizer also saves money on not having to buy cleaning products and also not having to buy bottled water.
It is way more economical to get a water ionizer and KDF filters for your home. A whole house water filter system is more expensive and will not produce the pH of water that you most need at the different places in your home. So don’t waste your money!
