Several decades ago our air was clean, our water was clean, and the pipes in our cities were new. You could turn on your tap and drink pure and healthy water. But this isn’t the case anymore. Many cities, especially on the East Coast, have original pipes or pipes that haven’t been updated in decades. They are rusted, have fractures in them that let in bacteria, and even leach heavy metals into what once was pure water.To compensate for our old infrastructure and crumbling pipes, municipal water companies have been pumping more and more chemicals into our water. It’s not just chlorine anymore. Harsh disinfectant chemicals like chromium-6 and chloramine are now also being used to keep bacteria levels down.
On top of that, there has been an increase in the amount of nitrites and nitrates from farming that is getting into our water supply. These contaminants come from the abundance of waste produced by animal agriculture and the use of fertilizers. Animal agriculture is also contributing to an alarming increase of antibiotics in our water. Antibiotics are used to keep animals from getting sick in largely deplorable living conditions. These antibiotics seep into the groundwater supply.There has also been an increase in medications getting into our water supply. People are flushing their birth control pills and Prozac and heart medication and everything else down the toilet. This gets into our sewer system which gets into streams and lakes. That water ends up getting into our drinking water supply and contaminating it. Since these medications are relatively new, there aren’t good tests to detect them. Furthermore, the EPA has not set safe levels for them in our drinking water. Therefore, our municipal water treatment facilities are not targeting these medications. The wrong medication in your body, even in small amounts, can have adverse health effects.
Lastly, as we have written about before, drought conditions across the u.s. have concentrated existing contaminants in our drinking water supply.
All of these situations have contributed to a decrease in the quality of our tap water. It is now imperative for you to treat tap water with a home water filter before you drink it. Most home water filters are carbon-based. Activated carbon is great at removing most contaminants. But it doesn’t get out the really small contaminants like leftover medications and chromium-6. It also doesn’t remove heavy metals or fluoride.At the very least you need a multi-stage water filtration system. And it needs to be much larger than something that simply hooks up to your faucet like a Pur or Brita filter. Your multi-stage water filtration system should include ceramic, ion exchange resin, and other rotating stages calibrated to at least 99.9% removal.
The good news is you can get all of these important stages of water filtration in a water ionizer. But a water ionizer doesn’t stop there.
