While some claim that we are as much as 97% water, the truth is adult men are about 60% water, adult women are about 55% water, and infants are about 70% water. Our brain and kidneys are approximately 80-85% water. Our heart and lungs are around 75-80% water. Our liver, muscles, and skin contain roughly 70-75% water. So, that’s a huge amount of our bodies that are made of water.
So, why do we need to drink water to be healthy? For one, beverages like juice are only 80 to 90% water. So, we’re not getting the same hydration. Secondly, beverages like juice and soda are full of empty calories that can cause weight gain. They also have artificial flavors, colors, preservatives, stabilizers, and these beverages tend to be acidic. Plus, all those chemicals and acidity put a strain on our immune systems, attack our bones, raise our blood pressure, and even set us up for illness later in our lives, like diabetes.
One of the top ways Americans gain weight is by drinking their calories. We don’t think about weight gain when we drink juice, flavored coffee, sports drinks, and other high-sugar beverages. But a soda has a couple hundred calories. Sports drinks are closer to 300. The same goes for coffee with creamer. We are only supposed to consume 2000 to 2500 calories a day. When we drink several hundred calories, it’s easy to gain weight.
