Mitigating Radiation and Chemo Side Effects:
The strongest clinical evidence involves quality-of-life support. A randomized controlled trial in liver cancer patients undergoing radiation showed that drinking hydrogen-rich water for six weeks significantly reduced oxidative stress markers and radiation-induced side effects (like fatigue and appetite loss) without compromising the tumor-killing efficacy of the radiation.
In Vitro & Pre-Clinical Anti-Tumor Effects:
In laboratory and animal models, ionized water has demonstrated an ability to scavenge intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS). Studies on breast and lung cancer cell lines show ionized water can down-regulate VEGF (a protein tumors use to grow new blood vessels/angiogenesis) and induce apoptosis (programmed cell death) in malignant cells.
Immune System Modulation:

In 2011, a randomized double-blind clinical trial called the Quality of Life During Liver Cancer Radiotherapy was published in the Medical Gas Research journal.
49 patients undergoing radiotherapy for malignant liver tumors (hepatocellular carcinoma) drank either 1,500 to 2,000 mL per day of ionized water or plain placebo water for 6 weeks during radiation therapy.
The Results:
Reduction in Side Effects:
Patients who drank ionized water reported significantly improved Quality of Life (QOL) scores, including less fatigue, lower rates of appetite loss, and fewer gastrointestinal symptoms than the placebo group.
Oxidative Stress:
Blood tests showed that HRW significantly reduced radiation-induced reactive oxidative metabolites (d-ROMs) while preserving serum biological antioxidant capacity.
No Interference with Cancer Treatment: Crucially, tumor response rates to radiotherapy were identical in both groups, showing that hydrogen’s antioxidant action did not protect tumor cells from radiation-induced destruction.
In 2019, another clinical trial, Advanced Colorectal Cancer & Immune Exhaustion, was published in Oncology Reports. 55 patients with advanced colorectal cancer undergoing chemotherapy inhaled hydrogen gas and consumed hydrogen-rich ionized water daily.
The Results:
CD8+ T-Cell Rejuvenation: The study measured programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) expression on cytotoxic CD8+ T cells (the primary immune cells that kill cancer cells). High PD-1 levels indicate immune cell exhaustion.
Survival Outcomes:
Ingestion/inhalation of hydrogen significantly decreased PD-1 expression on CD8+ T cells, effectively reactivating “exhausted” immune cells. This immune restoration correlated with significantly prolonged overall survival and progression-free survival in patients with advanced disease.
