Plastic bottles are toxic.
Plastic water bottles protect us against water-borne diseases, but many of them contain chemicals that are dangerous to human health.
For example, hard water bottles are made with bisphenol A (BPA), which can change the normal hormonal activity of your body. BPA is linked to diabetes, obesity, breast cancer, testicular cancer, miscarriages, and other reproductive failures. Your risk of getting BPA in your water from your water bottle is low if your bottle is kept cool. But this risk significantly increases if your water bottle is exposed to heat. How often do you leave your bottle in your car? By a hot window? Outside in the sun? Probably more often than you think.
Standard disposable bottled water (e.g., Aquafina, Dasani) is made from Polyethylene Terephthalate. PET does not naturally contain BPA or BPB. But there are other issues with these soft plastic bottles to consider, like:
Microplastics.
A single 1-liter bottle of PET bottled water contains an average of ~240,000 plastic particles, about 90% of which are nanoplastics (particles smaller than 1 micrometer). The plastic bottle sheds from the bottle walls, especially when squeezed, exposed to sunlight, or stored for long periods. Opening and twisting the plastic cap repeatedly sheds fragments into the water as well. As you know from our previous section on microplastics, this is potentially VERY bad for your health. We still don’t know the full extent of how microplastics affect our health, but they end up in our brain and vital organs! That’s not good!
Other Added Chemicals:
Plastics are made with various chemical additives—such as plasticizers, stabilizers, and flame retardants—that can leach into the water over time. These include phthalates and bisphenols, which are added to make plastics flexible or durable. These chemicals mimic or block natural hormones (like estrogen and testosterone), throwing off our hormone balance. Chronic exposure is linked to reduced fertility, altered thyroid function, early puberty, metabolic disorders, and an increased risk of hormone-sensitive cancers (such as breast and prostate cancer).
PFAS.
Independent testing has revealed detectable levels of PFAS in multiple popular commercial bottled water brands—including both still and sparkling varieties. Chronic exposure to PFAS is linked to:
Regulatory gaps.
In many jurisdictions, bottled water is regulated under food safety authorities (such as the FDA in the US) rather than environmental protection agencies (like the EPA).
You should be concerned about this because it means that bottled water is tested less frequently. Municipal tap water systems are legally required to test for contaminants multiple times per day and report results publicly. By contrast, bottled water plants are subject to less frequent mandatory testing schedules.
PFA standards for bottled water have historically lagged behind municipal tap water regulations, meaning bottled water does not automatically guarantee lower contaminant levels than filtered tap water.
Besides containing potentially dangerous levels of chemicals, bottled water is also a serious threat to the environment we live in. Here are the top seven ways plastics bottles are damaging our planet:
U.S. Recycling Rate:
Only 30% of PET plastic bottles are recycled; over two-thirds go straight to landfills or incinerators, filling up our landfills and releasing their toxic chemicals when they are burned.
Global Bottled Waste:
Globally, roughly 1.3 billion plastic bottles are used every day. There are so many plastic bottles, there is an island of them floating around in the ocean! If you were to place these bottles end to end, they would circle the Earth approximately seven times!
Decomposition Time:
A PET water bottle takes between 450 to 500 years to slowly break down in a landfill. So, once they are made, we are stuck with them for several generations. Not exactly a nice problem to leave to our kids, and their kids, etc.
Petroleum Consumption:
Manufacturing the PET plastic bottles consumed in the U.S. alone requires an estimated 17 million barrels of oil annually—enough energy to fuel roughly 1 million cars for a year.
High Water Footprint: Producing a single plastic water bottle requires significantly more water than the bottle actually holds. It takes roughly 1.4 gallons of water to process and manufacture a typical single-use PET bottle.
Energy Costs:
Bottled water requires 11 to 90 times more energy to produce, package, transport, and refrigerate than delivering standard tap water.
High Carbon Output: The carbon footprint of bottled water is 300 to 1,000 times higher than that of local tap water.
All of this adds up to making bottled water a scam. If consumers knew that the water in the plastic bottles was contaminated and knew about the massive environmental toll, we believe that they wouldn’t buy it. We believe they would immediately invest in a safe water bottle and filter their water at home with multistage water filtration and ionization.
But instead, the American consumer is relentlessly bombarded by marketing campaigns that make bottled water look healthy and worth the investment, making this a scam.
