The Trump administration and the new EPA administrator, Lee Zeldin, have launched an initiative called Make America Healthy Again. Unfortunately, their philosophy for doing this includes major deregulation that prioritizes cutting what they call red tape put in place under the Biden administration. This so-called red tape is actually Safe Drinking Water Act restrictions on cancer-causing pollutants like PFAS and glyphosate in our drinking water, along with timetables for their reduction and removal. Because of this deregulation, your drinking water just became much more dangerous to drink.
The EPA announced a proposal to entirely rescind federal drinking water standards and maximum contaminant levels for four major PFAS. Yes, you heard that right. Despite the massive research linking PFAS to cancer and other extreme health conditions, the EPA is actually looking to eliminate the limits of these chemicals in your drinking water.
Specifically, they want to rescind the restrictions on HHPO-DA, PFNA, PFHXS, and PFBS. If you remember from our earlier articles, these PFAS compounds are essentially the same, but go by different names to circumvent regulations and litigation.
The Safe Drinking Water Act regulations that reduce these PFAS officially were finalized in 2024. They established strict and enforceable nationwide limits on these chemicals. However, Lee Zeldin and the new EPA want to relieve water companies of the cost of complying with the Safe Drinking Water Act. Along with removing protections for the four PFAS mentioned above, they want to allow water companies to file extensions up to 2 years to come into compliance with the other standards. They have also pushed back the compliance deadline from 2029 to 2031. The EPA’s reasoning is that it will give technology a chance to mature and possibly develop cheaper methods for removing the chemicals. But in reality, this just allows chemical manufacturers to continue to turn a high profit without consequences. Environmental groups estimate that this will strip away critical tap water protections for 105 million Americans.
If you remember, glyphosate is the active ingredient in weed killers like Roundup. It has been linked to cancer in humans and devastating environmental impacts. However, the Trump administration, along with Lee Zeldin and the EPA, have decided to change agricultural policy and allow food producers to use glyphosate in the fields without restrictions.
They argue that this will lower the cost of food because the crop growers won’t have to work as hard to weed the fields, but at the same time all our produce will be exposed to high levels of glyphosate, which will also seep into our water supply when it rains. This new policy could destroy entire ecosystems and put our health at an even higher risk.
Of course, this isn’t about saving the crop growers’ money; it’s about allowing Monsanto (which has branched into several different companies now), which makes Glyphosate, to continue to sell their product and make billions in profits, a percentage of which is most certainly being kicked back to members of Trump’s administration and other people who have invested in his success.
The bottom line is corruption is running rampant in Washington right now, and your health and your drinking water are being targeted. Instead of reducing PFAS and glyphosate in our drinking water, the Trump administration and the EPA are increasing their levels.
