ToggleThe history of water ionizers spans nearly a century, evolving from early agricultural experiments in East Asia to specialized medical devices in Japan, and eventually into a global home-appliance industry.
1931–1950s
In 1931, Japanese medical researcher Michisue Suwa began investigating the biological effects of electrolyzed water on plants and animals. Early electrolysis machines produced what was then termed “Synnohl liquid.” By 1954, agricultural trials demonstrated that this electrolyzed water improved crop yields (particularly rice) and animal growth rates.
1958–1965
Researchers turned their focus to human health, introducing large-scale batch electrolyzers to Japanese clinics and military hospitals to assist with wound care and gastrointestinal symptoms.
In October 1965, the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW) issued official Notice Vol. 763, formally recognizing electrolyzed water generators as household medical apparatuses indicated for treating gastrointestinal symptoms such as chronic diarrhea, indigestion, and hyperacidity.
1970s–1980s
The technology transitioned from batch-style tanks to continuous flow-through systems that could connect directly to a kitchen faucet. Around this time, manufacturers introduced built-in activated carbon filters to clean municipal tap water before electrolysis.
During the 1970s, South Korea embraced the technology, establishing its own manufacturing hub and issuing similar medical device designations through the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.
1985–2000s
Commercial countertop units were introduced to the United States and Europe in the mid-1980s. Independent safety testing in the U.S. verified non-toxicity, opening the door for direct-to-consumer sales and multi-level marketing (MLM) distribution networks like Enagic (Kangen Water), which popularized the appliance across North America.
The Shift to Molecular Hydrogen Research
In 2007, a landmark paper published in Nature Medicine by Dr. Shigeo Ohta demonstrated that molecular hydrogen acts as a selective antioxidant. This shifted the scientific and manufacturing focus from high pH alone to maximizing dissolved hydrogen concentration, leading to modern dual-chamber and SMPS (switched-mode power supply) ionizer designs.
What began as an electro-agricultural experiment in 1930s Japan became a regulated medical device category in East Asia by the 1960s, ultimately driving today’s multi-billion-dollar global alkaline and hydrogen water market.
